| Another wonderful and interesting week in Cartagena. The days start
8am with 2 hours of Spanish lessons; after that I so a little work on
the ship. SILVER BLUE is in perfect condition; there are only a few more
jobs to be done under the ship. In the afternoon I stroll around the enchanting
old town a little or do some shopping. And in the evenings, there's rumba
- but mainly on weekends since the evenings here only get started around
11pm. And on Sundays I go to the beach or - as in this week - for a nice walk, visiting one of the many historical monuments. This week it was the "Castillo San Felipe de Barajas". |

It was built on the San Làzaro hill in 1657, dominating the town and offering great view of Cartagena. The citadel is a huge building; the surrounding walls are 5.1 kilometers long. With its 4 different defense stations, the main fort and a hospital it provides many amazing impressions.

Countless tunnels divide the citadels interior; amongst them even one
long tunnel leading to the fort San Luis, 5 km away. Lots of small rooms lead away from these tunnels and their ceilings - even in the tunnels themselves - show that the people must have been much shorter then. It is nice to get back into daylight and fresh air after such a long inspection of the citadels interior, even though the fort has complex ventilation and sewage systems, especially considering the time it was built. |

At the end of the day the only entrance to the main fort, the drawbridge, presents a magnificent view of the city. BILD There'll be more about Cartagena next week, if you like
