CW 05 2004

26.01. - 01.02.2004

Off we go now - and it's about time we went sailing again. So first we sail to the island Bona in the golf of Panama. We meet our first dolphins and a few small whales here.
The next day starts off quiet, with little wind but with a rare encounter: a turtle paddles by.

During the day the wind picks up and we sail along nice and fast, doing 7-9 knots. Therefore we decide to sail through the night and already arrive in the Golf of Chiriqui the next day. We pass Punta Mala at midnight where a strong wind and surge push SILVER BLUE along, doing 12 knots over ground.
We reach the island Cabaco around noon and spend the night in a wide bay, the Ensenada Naranjo.

From here we continue towards the island Coiba, a unique natural paradise. The reason why untouched fauna and flora can still be found here is, that the island was home to some prison camps for years. One is still here, housing 39 prisoners. That's why entering the island was strictly controlled then and still is today - and that has protected nature. Lets hope that the place can be kept in this unique condition. Unfortunately Panamas high society has plans for monstrous projects, but hopefully those will be prohibited. There is some soft tourism here, which ought to be supported since it brings money needed to protect one of the last paradises. We sailors are also asked for our donation and pay 10 dollars per person and 30 dollars for the right to anchor the ship.
In exchange a magnificent underwater world with crystal clear water awaits us

And only as we explore the jungle with a ranger do we realize what a large natural treasure the earth holds for us here.

More about lots of other beautiful islands, here, next week, if you like...

until then, take care!
