| There are a lot of celebrations going on this week, and not just because
of the French national holiday, but because the one-month festival is
also still in full swing. So there'll be more impressive dance performances,
but this time from Tahitian dancers. Their dances are less powerful than
the Marquesian ones, but the dances gracefulness becomes more apparent.

In Polynesia, besides the art of dancing, the art of tattooing is widely performed, starting with small symbolical tattoos, right up to entire stories tattooed onto a body. |
| The Polynesian also love to wear flowers during festivals, so Nela too is adorned with a flower garland. Those are artfully made and Basil, growing here in abundance, is also worked into them. Therefore those flower rings don't just look beautiful, they also smell wonderful. | ![]() |

On the weekend an opportunity arises - a drive to the airport, dropping
off friends' daughters who are visiting relatives. Usually that would
be an inconvenience, but here it's pure adventure. The road, partially a sodden dirt path full of potholes, winds its way through the Mountains of Nuku Hiva. |
But, the drive through the islands so-called "desert" offers a beautiful view of, amongst other, the "Grand Canyon" and lots of 'nature'. And getting bolted around for 3 hours becomes worthwhile. More about Nuku Hiva, next week … Tom & Nela |
