27.10. - 02.11.2003

This was a really "birdy" week. On Wednesday Chris is at the door and tells us that he's organized a guide for us to visit the Soberania national park the next day. We're happy to join in since this park is one of the world's hotspots, as far as bird watching is concerned. Josè picks us up with his jeep at 5 am on Thursday. Later on we realize that Josè is a real expert - he really does know every bird, and in Panama there are more than 800 different kinds. On this day we saw 102 of them. Here some beautiful examples …

Getting up that early was really worthwhile. Even for us amateurs the birds sitting in these branches are unbelievably beautiful. Chris and Josè, "professional" bird watchers, are totally enchanted. Around noon we return from the Canal-trail. Our expedition team (on the right) is hungry and in the city gardens of Gamboa we enjoy Christine's picnic. We resume bird watching until the evening, but at a different place and we get to see humming-birds and towards the end even a few monkeys hopping through the trees.

On Sunday we explore the historical places in Panama City. Casco Viejo is a unique collection of impressive buildings, but there's always another side to it and there also are run down hostels where only grass looks out of the windows.

And last but not least we visit the old Panama, located a few kilometers outside of today's city borders. Today Panama la Vieja isn't more than a bunch of ruins, but it still conveys the spirit of times gone by.

More from here next week, if you like ...

Until then, take care!
